Mill Upgrade Projects The Pulp mill in Terrace Bay, Ontario has always treated its’ environmental responsibilities with the utmost regard and has strived, and continually strives for, continued improvement in all areas of environmental management. The Mill has expended almost $100 million on environmental and cost saving projects. Such projects, recognized as “best available technologies” by industry and regulatory authorities, consist of: - adding a 64 acre Aerated Stabilization Basin (ASB) secondary treatment system
- upgrading the chlorine dioxide generator to R8 capability
- No.2 recovery boiler conversion to low odour
- stormwater control systems
- oxygen bleaching (cost reduction and improved effluent)
- debottlenecking(increasing volume throughput)
- boiler tube replacement program
- New grate system for the power boiler
- Digester replacement program—All digesters upgraded to larger, more efficient digesters
- Kiln Chain replacement(leading to a 20% reduction in kiln-oil usage)
- Bark Dumper and Bark Reclaimer/Conditioner(To reduce oil usage)
- Steam Turbine(to take the mill to 100%, from approximately 50%, electricity self-sufficient)
Regularly occurring third party inspections have been, and continue to be, carried out by regulators to ensure compliance with all regulations and facility Certificates of Approval. Terrace Bay Pulp Inc. maintains a program and procedures to reduce or eliminate source reduction of hazardous and/or non-hazardous materials, reduction of air emissions, water conservation and energy conservation.
