The Sustainable Forest License for the Kenogami Forest was transferred to Terrace Bay Pulp Inc. (TBPI)_on August 31st, 2006. One of the key objectives at the time of acquisition was to obtain recognition of our sustainable forest management practices for the Kenogami Forest and procurement for the TBPI mill facility through an independent third party certification to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standard for sustainable forest management. TBPI was able to achieve this goal within 3 months of the acquisition; specifically November 16, 2006. One of the major changes to fibre management on the Kenogami Forest is that Terrace Bay Pulp Inc. has developed an integrated sawmill to pulp mill relationship, thus helping to ensure best end-use of sourced wood fibre. This integration, along with the millions of dollars invested, allow better merchandising of wood fibre inputs into the mill by culling unacceptable logs, and directly increasing the capacity to feed Terrace Bay Pulp with sawmill residuals. TBPI has taken further steps towards increased utilization of wood fibre by encouraging the topping of treelength to a diameter well below the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) standards. This practice has resulted in enhanced utilization of wood fibre by approximately 20% from logging slash.
