Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) Sawdust-based pulp

  • Sawdust-based pulps are an environmentally advanced, environmentally friendly and technologically innovative product.
  • Sawdust-based pulps provide good sheet strength combined with excellent formation, smoothness and ease of refining.

LL19 FINES Advantages

  • LL19 FINES has very high initial tensile strength and is very easily refined. It is an excellent reinforcement substitute for other market NBSK pulps and a reinforcement fiber replacement for hardwood pulp products where extra strength properties are required.
  • LL19 FINES high internal bond and high wetness (low freeness) development makes the pulp suitable for wet beaten papers such as tracing and greaseproof.
  • LL19 FINES high Black spruce content and slender fiber wall thickness helps produce a pulp with an excellent response to refining, which is very beneficial to those paper mills endeavoring to reduce energy costs or to maximize throughput through their refiners. These slender fibers produce a smooth, and dense base stock for a variety of coatings. These qualities allow the coating color to be formulated with a minimum of binder. This allows coating color designers to create high pigment coatings that exhibit excellent printed gloss and color fidelity. Outstanding printability can most often be traced back to an accommodating base stock that permitted the coating color to be formulated with a high pigment/binder ratio. **
  • LL19 FINES is a good reinforcement pulp. It has good fiber length-to-coarseness ratios--a key predictor of reinforcement potential—rivaling other NBSK market pulps.
  • LL19 FINES has high fiber strength. Tear strength values at any given tensile breaking length are as high as other NBSK market pulps.
  • LL19 FINES has a very high Tensile Energy Absorption (TEA); higher than most NBSK market pulps. Papers made from pulps with a high TEA are capable of handling repeated snaps and violent changes in tension during multiple converting operations. **
  • LL19 FINES is capable of high tensile strengths at higher freeness and bulk than the average NBSK. It also exhibits very high tear strength properties and high tensile strengths coupled with high fold properties and exhibits a good balance of tear and tensile strength properties.
  • LL19 FINES low coarseness and higher collapse, as well as very efficient low coarseness to fiber length ratio and high fiber strength, allows for lower levels of higher cost premium softwood pulps to be used, which in turn provides better formation and sheet structure, as well as substantial costs savings. **

LL19 FINES - A Substitute for other market NBSK pulps

  • LL19 FINES is well suited to Tissue, Toweling, Freesheet, Wood-free Printing and Writing Papers and Specialty Papers.
  • LL19 FINES is an excellent pulp for White Top and Mottled Linerboard—where its fiber length and population combine for effective covering of the brown base sheet and also provides a smooth printing surface.
  • LL19 FINES possesses very high initial tensile strength, which exceeds most other market NBSK pulps and is a definite advantage to all manufacturers of tissue products.
  • LL19 FINES fiber length is up to 2 times longer than other hardwood market pulps making it an excellent softwood extender or reinforcement pulp in products where extensive hardwood percentages are used and extra strength properties are required.
  • LL19 FINES has more than 2 to 3 times the fiber population of typical market NBSK pulp. Papers made using LL19 FINES will show improved sheet formation, density and will be more opaque because the extra fibers diffuse more light and therefore create an attractive, flat looking sheet.
  • LL19 FINES refines very easily. There are significant energy savings associated with pulps requiring very little refining.
  • LL19 FINES provides the ability to produce a given caliper at a much lower basis weight allowing manufacturers the ability to use less fiber to make a given product and thereby providing a significant yield advantage.
  • For Mechanical Printing Papers, Coated and Uncoated Freesheet Papers, LL19 FINES coarseness to length ratio and good fiber strength with high fracture toughness, make it a very good pulp.
  • LL19 FINES high scattering coefficient helps produce more opaque printing papers.

Forest Certification and Sustainable Forest Management

Terrace Bay Pulp Inc. has achieved forest certification to the SFI standard and has achieved internationally recognized SFI Chain of Custody certification.

Terrace Bay Pulp Inc. self declares that it will not knowingly source wood or wood fiber from any unacceptable or controversial sources, which include:
a) Illegally harvested wood
b) Wood harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights
c) Wood harvested in forests where high conservation values are threatened by management activities
d) Wood harvested in forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use
e) Wood from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted

Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

Forest certification through sustainable forestry is a cornerstone of responsible forest management. Sustainable forestry is the practice of land stewardship that integrates harvesting and reforestation of trees while preserving soil, air and water quality, wildlife and plant habitat as well as aesthetics for today and into the future. ••

Sustainable Forestry is based on the concept of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the anticipated needs of future generations. This is accomplished by practicing a land stewardship ethic that integrates the reforestation, managing, growing, nurturing and harvesting of trees for useful products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, biological diversity, wildlife and aquatic habitat, recreation, and aesthetics. ••

The SFI® program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by foresters, conservationists and scientists that, when put into practice, ensure forests are being managed in a sustainable manner. ••
